COVID-19 Google Ads credits: The basics
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Google created a fund to give away $340 million in Google Ads credits to SMBs. This aid is part of their $800 million COVID-19 relief package.
So, who qualifies for the COVID-19 ad credit?
Google has three eligibility requirements:
- You advertised on Google for 10 out of the 12 months during 2019 and advertised in either January or February of 2020
- You advertised through Google directly or by using a third-party partner, like a digital marketing company
- You adhered to all of Google’s advertising policies
How to claim your COVID-19 Google Ads credits
So, if you’re wondering how to claim your COVID-19 Google Ads credits, here’s the first thing you need to know: You don’t need to “claim” anything. Google will automatically apply the credits to your account.
Google will send an email to the administrator(s) on the account to notify them of the credit on the Google Ads account.
Once you get the email, go to the Promotion Center within your Google Ads account. When you visit this section in your account, you can find your credit amount. It will appear as a “new promotion” in your account.
In addition to the amount, you’ll see the status of your credit, when it expires, and how much of it you’ve spent when you apply it.
FAQ about COVID-19 Google Ads credits
Here are some commonly asked questions about the COVID-19 ad credit:
Do the credits expire?
Yes. The credits are valid until December 31, 2020. Any unused credit will disappear from your account after that date.
Where can I use these credits?
You can apply the COVID-19 Google Ads credits to different types of advertising campaigns through Google.
You can use your credit on the following types of ad campaigns:
- Search ads
- Display ads
- Remarketing ads
- YouTube ads
When you launch your advertising campaign, the credits will apply to your campaign automatically.
How do I know if I qualify as an SMB?
Google doesn’t have specific qualifications you have to meet to count as an SMB. They state that they “work with SMBs worldwide from local stores to companies with hundreds of employees and many locations.” So, if you aren’t a large corporation, you will more than likely qualify.
How much credit will I receive?
There is no set credit amount for all businesses. The credit amount is on a case-by-case basis and depends on your company.
Google considers three main factors when determining your credit amount:
- Historical Google Ads spend
- Location
- Currency of the Google ads account
Each eligible customer can receive one credit for Google Ads. This COVID-19 ad credit can be up to $1000, but the amount will vary depending on the factors listed above.
